LAST STAND OF
THE TIN CAN SAILORS
BRINGS BATTLE OFF SAMAR TO HISTORY CHANNEL
Over
three days, beginning on October 23rd, 1944 the greatest naval battle in history
was fought. As it raged, there were two-and-a-half harrowing hours when
America's whole Pacific campaign hung in the balance. Only the suicidal courage
of a few brave sailors, in a handful of ships nicknamed Tin Cans, averted what
might have been a strategic disaster for U.S forces. In a fight that made David
vs. Goliath look like a sporting proposition, seven tiny US destroyers and
destroyer escorts sacrificed themselves against a twenty-three ship Japanese
armada of battleships and heavy cruisers to save MacArthur's Leyte beachhead
from annihilation.
The gripping saga of the Tin Can heroes of the Battle Off Samar premieres on
History Channel November 11, 2005.
